The Evergreen State College holds graduation at Cheney Stadium
Changing the venue for The Evergreen State College's graduation did not mean the recent campus unrest was ignored.
For the first time in school history, the college held graduation off the Olympia campus.
The class of 2017 received their diplomas on a stage behind second base at Tacoma's Cheney Stadium.
College President George Bridges mentioned the campus' recent protests and demonstrations in his opening remarks.
"There have been moments of disappointment, but they've been followed by moments of great joy," Bridges said. "Our celebration today is one of the most joyful times."
The school received national attention after protests over a faculty member's criticism of proposed changes to campus events and proposed policy regarding minorities.
Before Friday's graduation, students and their family members had to pass through metal detectors to get inside the stadium.
"I would prefer it had been at Evergreen," graduate Johnny Hanson said. "It makes sense there'd be more security here."
