First Emmy awarded for podcast

KING 5.com wins regional Emmy for podcast, "Drive," and national Edward R. Murrow Award for journalism excellence

Teri Citterman, 206 719 5001

SEATTLE, WA – June 18, 2007 –  Podcasting has reached a significant milestone in the television world.  For the first time ever, the National Academy of Television Arts and Science (NATAS) awarded an Emmy, which traditionally recognizes excellence in television, for a podcast entry in its Advanced Media Category.  KING 5, Seattle/Tacoma’s NBC affiliate and number one television station, announced today that its affiliate Web site, KING5.com, was awarded a regional Emmy for its video podcast “Drive” on NorthWest Cable News (NWCN) http://www.nwcn.com/podcasts/.   Hosted and produced by Tom Voelk, “Drive” features reviews of today’s newest and hottest cars, trucks and SUVs.  This marks the first time a podcast has been awarded an Emmy either on the local or national level.

In addition, KING5.com won the national Edward R. Murrow award for journalism excellence at a large market station site – the highest honor for a local television Web site – and five Society of Professional Journalist awards including Best Overall Web Site in the Northwest.

“It is a real honor to receive such tremendous recognition for our technological leadership,” said Ray Heacox, president and general manager of KING 5, KONG 6/16, NWCN and Weather Plus.  “To be the first to win an Emmy for our podcast is a true mark of distinction.”

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was founded in 1955. It is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. It recognizes excellence in television with the coveted Emmy® Award for News, Sports, Daytime, Public Service and Technology. The Radio-Television News Directors Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.  The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
